Williamson dashes to shock gold
Michael Phillips
Saturday July 14, 2007
The Guardian
Simeon Williamson yesterday showed the depth of Britain's young sprinters when he produced the performance of his life to beat his team-mate Craig Pickering to gold at the European Under-23 Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.
Pickering was favourite for the title after a tremendous year in which he won silver at the European Indoor Championships and only last month flew to victory at the European Cup. But Williamson made a sensational start to smash his personal best with victory in 10.10, a championship record, ahead of Pickering, who was second in 10.14, 0.01 inside his previous fastest time. Martial Mbandjock, of France, was third in 10.27.
The 21-year-old Williamson, who runs for Highgate Harriers, had brought extra tension to the final by suffering a false start but he made no mistake the second time. He said: "I have never been so nervous as I was when we came out on to the track and after the false start I thought to myself, 'Here we go.' Under pressure I do not normally drive out of the blocks. But this time I did. I remembered what my coach, Lloyd Cowan, had been drilling into me and then, when I felt Craig coming up on my outside, I just kept up the technique. I had been waiting two years for this victory."
It was in 2005 that Pickering beat Williamson to gold at the European Junior Championships but the member of Britain's senior relay squad made no mistake this time. Pickering said: "He deserved that. There was not very much I could do about it. I ran a PB. I did all I could."
Williamson's victory adds to what will be a tremendous race at the world championship trials in Manchester in a fortnight when this young pair will face Marlon Devonish, who leads the British rankings this season with 10.06.

Under 15 Girls Pentathlon
It surely was a day of high drama in the rain
Eucalypta Bradley competed for the London Schools team and managed to come in 11 th place 2,285 points after bashing her knees to pieces in the first event 75H Apparently set off on the wrong leg crashed into two hurdles but recovered to finish (13.7)...Had emergency treament then it was three goes at shotputt (8.40).In pain and disappointed with performances way off her best, at this point she was ready to go home! After support from the team she pulled herself together mentally to
High Jump (1.50) but got sent off at 1.53 for running out of time.
Long Jump got some points in (4.20) then really let it all hang out to set a new pb in 800m of (2.58)
Hooray under 3mins at last!!!!!
Supportive team mate Amelia Richards ( Hercules Wimbledon) went on to win the event for London despite being disappointed with her highjump... she gained 3,037 points.(Sorry no more points info at this point)
Yes It surely was a day of high drama in the rain...having started at 10am the event finished about 7pm...

Perivale
...there will be a coach going from Highgate rd
and the last match of the season is:
Sunday July 22nd- Young Athletes League
Parliament Hill Fields
Dont be shy..Pass it on
Please tell the team managers you are thinking of competing in
advance to ensure there is a space for you...some age groups appear
virtually empty and some very full !!!!!!
from the score so far HH wont be staying in division one.....so back
to only 4 matches next year!
i expect not many of you are signed up to HH Google (good way to get the HH news updates) and some are not
members as of yet ,,,so might i suggest that you elite people spread
the news to your club mates..?
apparently there is even a picnic after the last "home" match?
Good Luck!

Rankings and Targets
The Power of 10 is not just another initiative, or a list of athletics rankings,
it's a year-on-year drive for greater strength in depth across all events and
regions. After careful analysis of world, UK and regional standards and trends,
we've built up a clear picture of the progress we will need to make in order to
produce more world-class athletes.
HOW are the Power of 10 rankings worked out?
In an average week during the track and field season, more than 10,000
rankings are added
with up to 200 new athletes added per day. You can easily appreciate that
the volume of
results available on a weekly basis can mean that not all results appear
on the site within a
few days. So the site has prioritised input to help the process. It now
has direct access to
every result from:
UK Young Athletes League
National Junior Athletics League
British Athletics League
UK Women's Athletics League
National Championships - Seniors and Age Groups, eg Norwich Union Under 23
and Under 20
Trials
Golden Jubilee Cup
National Schools Championships
UK Challenge
CAN I help by sending my results directly to you?
When a full set of match/meeting results are sent to us, they can be more
easily verified and
added. If a web link is given to a set of results, they are much easier to
verify.
Individual results take a little longer and is where we need your help. If
you are aware of
who can supply us a full result from any fixture, then please let us know
at the
results@powerof10.info email address and we will contact them.
WHAT if I spot a mistake on Power of 10?
Always use the ranking@powerof10.info email address to let us know of
errors or additions,
name corrections, club affiliations, etc. Most of these are corrected
within 24 hours.
Please read More info on their website

Middlesex County Athletics Association
The fifth Middlesex Athletics Association Coaching Day was held at Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Centre, Pickets Lock Sunday 25th March 2007 from 100.00 am to 4.00 pm.
Young Athletes from the Under 15 and Under 17 age groups attended
The aim of this coaching day is to help young athletes improve their skills and prepare them so that, if selected, they will be better able to represent Middlesex in County competitions during the coming season. The young athletes were joined by athletes of a similar standard to themselves drawn from throughout the county.
The programme for the day involved specific coaching in events and sessions on strength and conditioning
Athletes coaches were also welcome to attend.
Our guest athlete to talk to the squad was triple jumper Philips Idawo.
The talk was very interesting and entertaining. Athletes heard about what training entails for Philips at International level.
They also found out that Philips is a highly skilled basketball player.
After wards Philips chatted to all and signed autographs on Middlesex bags and even a pair of spikes.
The day was organised and funded by Middlesex County Athletics Association
